MUSIC
All students participate in
the music program at Saint Hilary School. The curriculum is based on the
National Standards for Arts Education and includes the application of these
standards to the formation of the child in worship. All students are required to participate in
the Christmas and Spring concerts.
Children in Primary
Kindergarten through Second Grade explore beat, rhythm, melody and dynamics.
Students learn to read whole, half, dotted half, quarter and eighth notes and
rests in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 meter signatures. They explore the world of music
including composers, instruments, musical styles and genres, and music
representing different cultures. Using movement and pitched and non pitched percussion instruments, the
students perform two to four measure exercises while reading the notation.
Students in the Third Grade
learn to play the recorder. Building on the rhythmic skills already explored,
the children will learn to read notes in the treble clef. They will learn to
perform independently and in groups a varied repertoire of music. Students must
purchase a recorder, Ed Sueta Recorder Method Book 1 for recorder and a
table top music stand. The students are expected to practice daily. (10 minutes
a day, 5 days a week is the minimum practice schedule.) In addition to the twice
a week 30 minutes class, Miss Carey is available for extra coaching sessions.
Fourth Grade students learn
the violin. Students will need a violin/bow, Muller-Rusch Violin Book 1
and a music stand. Students will continue developing their music theory and
reading skills while performing in groups and independently. They learn to
identify and define standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics,
tempo, articulation and expression.
Students are expected to
practice daily beginning with 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week increasing to at
least 30 minutes a day. In addition to reading and playing the notes, students
should be working toward a good posture and correct bow technique. .) In
addition to the twice a week 30 minutes class, Miss Carey is available for extra
coaching sessions.
The Fifth Grade students
learn the clarinet and continue their musical development by playing independent
instrumental parts while other students play or sing contrasting parts. Students
will need a clarinet, extra reeds, Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band
Method Bb Clarinet Book 1 and a music stand. They focus on breath control
and phrasing. Students are expected to practice daily beginning with 10 minutes
a day, 5 days a week increasing to at least 30 minutes a day. .) In addition to
the twice a week 30 minutes class, Miss Carey is available for extra coaching
sessions.
Students in the Sixth , Seventh and Eighth Grade have formed an ensemble.
They will continue developing their musical skills through ensemble playing.
Students will need to provide their own instrument and a folding music stand.
They are expected to practice 20-30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. These
students will listen, analyze and critique music, identify the relationship of
other disciplines and music and continue to increase their music vocabulary and
reading skills. In addition to the 45 minute class, Miss Carey is available for
extra coaching sessions.
Ensemble
instruments include violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, alto
saxophone, tenor saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba,
guitar, bass guitar and percussion.
Students may choose any ensemble instrument that has been studied
with a teacher for a year. Students must be able to read the notated music.
Please contact Miss Carey if you have any questions.
The Saint Hilary School Choir
is open to students in grades three through eight. Students will rehearse once a
week during the school day. These students will develop vocal technique, work on
ear training and sight singing. Students learn to sing both independently and
with others with an emphasis on pitch, rhythm, appropriate timbre, diction, and
posture while maintaining a steady tempo. Students are encouraged to act as
cantors or choir members for worship services. Students will have many
performance opportunities throughout the year at school, parish and civic
events.
The Saint Hilary School Tone
Chime Choir will make its debut during the 2007-2008 school year. Students in
Grades 3-8 may join. Students in Kindergarten-2nd Grade, who already know how to
read music, may also join by audition. The Tone Chime Choir will rehearse after
school on Tuesdays. Member should attend rehearsals regularly.
